ABSTRACT

1. A total of 17 strains of nonmannitol Shigella paradysenteriae (Sh. flexneri 4) were isolated from 1948 to 19612. One particular patient with symptoms of bacillary dysentery yielded four strains that were invariably mannitol negative and xylose fermenters, Sh. flexneri 43. Bacterial cultures, 55-1725 and 55-1900 which came from on individual case were at phase B variation. Antisera prepared by antigen 55-1725 or its equivalent and absorbed by Sh. variant Y may be useful for the identification of type or subtype organism belonging to Sh flexneri 44. Strain 55-1868 simulated serologically Sh. flexneri VIII (variant Y). (Summary)

ABSTRACT

Forty-six children admitted into the Nursery and Pediatric Wards of the Free Clinics of the Santo Tomas University Hospital from March 1 to December 31, 1960 were found to have had different forms of Escherichia coli infections An epidemic of Escherichia coli enterocolitis in the newborn caused by serotype 055:B5 was reviewed. The clinical manifestations of this form of enterocolitis as seen in the newborn was compared with that seen in older infants. The occurence of more serious fluid and electrolyte disturbances and fever in older infants was brought outSummaries of the clinical and laboratory findings in pneumonias and urinary tract infection due to serotypes of Escherichia coli were presented A statistical review of the frequency of demonstrating the different serotypes of Escherichia coli was made The occurence of interstitial bronchopneumonia with hemorrhages in the lungs and other organs and of lymphoid hyperplasia and catarrhal changes in the instestines are the more important anatomical changes seen in deaths attributed to Escherichia coli infections.
